According to sources close to the executive producers, it had always been the plan, although unbeknownst to Arnold, for Vallée to become re-involved in the show last fall.

Before the February order of additional photography started, the Vallée-led direction the show was taking was obvious, but sources close to Arnold say she felt obligated to see it through to the end. While DGA rules required Arnold be the director on set, Vallée was now an extremely hands-on EP dictating not only what would be shot, but how it would be shot, oversight that Arnold never had during the initial shoot. The optics were not lost on many associated with “Big Little Lies”: A show dominated by some of the most powerful actresses in Hollywood hired a fiercely independent woman director – who was now being forced to watch from the director’s chair as scenes were shot in the style of her male predecessor.

Very shitty!

If that was always the case why didn't they just get some HBO house director to do it. That's fucked up.

I guess they wanted the headlines and to be patted on the back for hiring a woman. Super fucked up.

Borderline miraculous (and probably speaks so highly of Arnold's professionalism) that it took this long to come out.

itd be better if he was at the police station for something totally innocuous and unrelated but it fuels her paranoia and ends tragically only to be revealed as a red herring but i bet its a real thing

this season has very little depth and is mostly an (exceptionally entertaining) acting showcase, so making mary louise broadly evil and lacking nuance totally fits.

like its always been a david e kelly tv show at heart. first seaon had the narrative complexity of a novel (largely thanks to the frame structure) and a prestige production.

but like, it was completely self contained and my memory is EVERYONE assumed it was limited series and when a second season was announced it was like .... “but why?” and then they announced streep and it was like “oooooh thats why”.

i know. thats why i said that

i was typing from my phone but i meant to include that: the first season was an adaptation and it shows and the frame is one of the ways it shows.
