i remember being bored senseless by both ultra and exciter when they came out; they're sleepy classics though

Ultra right me just right as a high school goth and i really think it's their best sounding album, needed another good banger tho. and exciter was initially uh exciting for me but none of it stuck around.
The answer is simple: artisanship.

i think some of their earlier albums are spotty but the run from Black Celebration to Ultra is solid AF

I had some rarities tape or something with everything counts on it and that one was great. I think I may also have construction time again.

of all the big "80's" bands, depeche mode had by far the best 90's

I don't think it makes you a herb, but growing up listening to the American version of BC I could always tell that it didn't belong with the rest of the album, somehow. I didn't learn until later when it was reissued that it was from some shitty new wave movie and the band hated it.
It's really not a bad song, though. Slight, but not bad.

yeah i remember being 13 in the middle of nowhere with no internet and nobody to ask about any of this and i knew something was off with that song being on that album and feeling vaguely like i was betraying the group for enjoying it

it's ok to like good songs and it's a good song with a very 80s movie soundtrack video
