if you cant deal him for even more picks and assets, keep him

okc received enough picks in the george + westbrook deals to deal one or two away to save 120 million imo

they essentially received double picks for george from lac, and were lucky to even get picks for westbrook... if I was a gm no way would I have given them anything to take on such an egregious contract

but if yr gonna deal two picks to get off cp3 contract, why trade russ at all, at that point u got nothing for him

I would argue that getting more for george allows them to take that into account with russ/paul

I don't see the russ trade in a vacuum

I see it as the potential paul trade's cost = ~1/3 of the george + westbrook combined trades

but as always ymmv

Getting off Russ without giving up assets is an achievement in itself. Paul also has negative value, but as long as they’re under the tax I wouldn’t give up anything to offload him. OKC can’t afford to throw a garbage team out there every night and he at least will keep them competitive enough to sell some tickets when he’s healthy.

If a team like Miami is dumb enough to offer any assets for him they can make the deal, but why force it? They don’t have to do a full-scale tank to rebuild with all those picks.

if you keep paul you win a few games which keeps you out of the absolute toilet (cleveland, suns, knicks)

by the same token you could argue that he helps you develop younger guys

tough call

if I was presti I obviously go for a neutral trade (no picks, equal salary) to trade paul to the heat

but if I only have to give up one pick to move him, I don't think it's such a bad trade-off

i absolutely look at george and westbrook as distinct transactions

once the george trade happens you have all those assets and you have westbrook

if you believe westbrook still has positive value on that contract, which im sure many teams do, then you should get assets back for moving westbrook

if you cant get positive trade value for westbrook... why trade westbrook???

because he helps you win meaningless games stuck in middle-of-the-pack mediocrity which prevents you from maximizing the potential of your draft picks?

trading russ is the sign that okc has finally decided to rebuild

at this point all moves should be about maximizing that process

Also because he’s been loyal to you his entire career and you should probably pay him back by helping him get to the destination he wants.

cool interview with jalen re: analytics
https://www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/ ... -analytics

there are many people that feel like it has a cultural overtone to it that basically suggests that, even though I may not have played and you did, I am smarter than you, and I know some things that you don’t know, and the numbers support me, not you. Two, you notice that, when it is a powerful job in sports—whether it is an owner, whether it is a president, whether it is a general manager, whether it is a coach—usually in football and basketball, sports that are primarily dominated by black Americans, it’s also an opportunity to funnel jobs to people by saying that, “I am smarter than you because the numbers back up what I say, and I am more read. I study more. I am able to take these numbers and manipulate my point.”
