takeaways, Fun remembering the transition from a SNES/N64 kid to a Playstation kid
aside from a couple standout games, 2003-09 was really a blackhole for gaming during the hardware wars.. going through lists i realized how little of the games i actually played to completion or even cared about at all.. where as picking from 96-02 was hard as hell

Definitely and non-coincidentally the time that the West dominated and games were flagging in Japan (for me)

I think it'd be a very good book (for video game books) doing the history of why Japan was struggling so much in the 00s

the inital flop of the ps3 causing the only american made console (x360) to win that generation is a huge factor (the wii doesn't count since it had insane hardware sales and comparatively low software sales, half of all sales were people who literally bought that thing for wii sports and never touched it again)

2001 until 2012 was kinda bleh on the whole

1993-99 and 2012-present are crazy good

I could play the games just from 2018 for another three years and not get bored

2001 through 2005 were some of the best years ever. we'd finally hit a comfortable point in the evolution of real-time 3d, games were still wildly experimental, new genres were being built overnight

this was 09 for me.. I picked infamous because its really the only game i remember playing a lot and having fun traversing the city and the combat was good. the good/evil mechanic was pretty shallow, but i remember enjoying it too.. but i dont think id ever plug in the ps3 to replay it

2007 was my bleakest year, I was so happy to find Retro Game Challenge came out then so I could put one in there and 2009 was a tough one too

Super Mario Galaxy and Portal are definitely good games but I don't LOVE them

if you don't like fps games, you have to write off orange box/portal/tf2/halo 3/s.t.a.l.k.e.r./bioshock/cod4/the darkness and it gets verrry thin after that for me

after reading the wiki, mask of the betrayer and persona 3 came out that year, but I've never finished the latter.

1981 - n/a
1982 - n/a
1983 - n/a
1984 - Tetris, but it was technically prototyped this year and released in north america in '86 I think. (HM: Marble Madness)
1985 - Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego (HM: A Mind Forever Voyaging)
1986 - Tetris if counting this year, otherwise Legend of Zelda (HM: Bubble Bobble, Metroid, Dark Castle, Chessmaster 2000)
1987 - The Fool's Errand (HM: Number Munchers)
1988 - Super Mario Brothers 3
1989 - Sim City (HM: Chip's Challenge)
1990 - Sim Earth (HM: Super Mario World, Dr. Mario, Secret of Monkey Island, Commander Keen, Loom)
1991 - Monkey Island 2 (HM: Link to the Past, Lemmings, NES Monopoly) - going by time sunk, it's 100% NES Monopoly
1992 - Star Control 2 (HM: Wolf3d, Alone in the Dark, Star Trek - 25th Anniversary Adventure Game, Lost Vikings)
1993 - Master of Orion (HM: Day of the Tentacle, Myst, Secret of Mana, Sam and Max, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, Sim City 2000, Solar Winds) - SC2000 is a strong competitor, but MOO might be my favorite 4X game
1994 - Super Metroid, X-Com (HM: Final Fantasy 6, Master of Magic) - X-Com is embedded deep in my soul as the best game of all time, but Super Metroid is the only game where it's one of my favorite games based almost entirely on being a fan of the game itself. I find myself comparing the complexity and precision of strategy it engenders in its movement to professional dance. Just a perfect game.)
1995 - Warcraft 2 (HM: Chrono Trigger, ARC, Seiken Densetsu 3)
1996 - Master of Orion 2, (HM: Subspace)
1997 - Riven (HM: Age of Empires, TetriNET)
1998 - Starcraft (HM: Half Life, Archmage, Brad the Game) - I was part of the Operation CWAL fanfiction writing group that started on the Blizzard forums, so I was pretty invested in Starcraft.
1999 - Alpha Centauri
2000 - Final Fantasy 9
2001 - Rez (HM: Civilization 3, Final Fantasy 10, Grand Theft Auto 3)
2002 - n/a
2003 - Sim City 4 (HM: Warning Forever)
2004 - Cave Story
2005 - Civilization 4 - MOO is more fun for me, but Civ 4 is such a perfect turn based strategy game it's almost clinical.
2006 - n/a
2007 - Desktop Tower Defense (HM: Portal, Mario Galaxy)
2008 - n/a
2009 - Minecraft (but notch is a bad dumb idiot)
2010 - Starcraft 2 (HM: Desktop Dungeons)
2011 - n/a
2012 - Frog Fractions (HM: X Com, Fez, FTL)
2013 - n/a
2014 - Goat Simulator
2015 - Invisible Inc. (HM: Her Story, Cities: Skylines)
2016 - The Witness (HM: Shenzhen I/O, Hitman) - Jonathan Blow seems like a dumb dumb, but these stupid puzzles were basically crack for me.
2017 - n/a
2018 - Hitman 2 (HM: Exapunks, Into The Breach)
2019 - Baba Is You (HM: Outer Wilds)
I pay tax to help pay for things like police..fire..parks..but it goes to Ferguson like people and foreigners who are scamming our stupid government that is full of pasta thieves like this guy
