Let's talk Aguachile Alley

Postby identikit » Fri Aug 16, 2019 9:29 am

Oh nice. Since this seems to be a little loved event here, I should keep my mouth shut around Chicago people that I'm excited like a little kid for this, right? Or do I get a pass when I voice my joy with a proper bumfuck accent?

yeah i have a rooftop hookup where i can grill and crush beers with a great view in relative privacy. i'm also a nerd who thinks these expensive death machines are sweet as hell, love seeing the f-22 and a-10 fly in person. they've had harriers and even b-2s in previous years too

I want to go have a beach afternoon with the fam like <1 hour away on Saturday and was planning on the dunes but there was some kind of chemical spill and beaches are closed there? Anybody ever go to those north shore places like Highland Park/Glencoe? We could also go to the botanic garden up there which would be a bonus.

They are sweet as hell! Okay I'm up, can we start? :ryan:

I was barking up the wrong tree looking for highrises. I can go to Whispers with a work pass, gonna do that and the beach today, and a private boat tomorrow. I've seen the Red Arrows show in Europe before, Blue Angels is what I'm most excited for, I think. And the parachuters. And the F-16 Viper. And the Ospray. Look at this thing!

Also bloody hell, saw that image on the Curbed article.

(I'm sorry. If you are grumpy because you get woken up early this weekend, think of a wide-eyed identikit somewhere in Chicago, jumping up and down in total excitement. I love this city.)

I lived up there before, as shitty as living there actually is, the lake access was fantastic. Rosewood beach is quite lovely, Highland Park.

quick tourist questions:

1) if i'm staying in river west and want to get dropped off in lyft with fam to walk around grant and millennium parks for a while, where's an ideal starting point and route?
2) any recs for a nice but not too crowded/touristy breakfast or brunch spot in the vicinity of grant and millennium parks?

Start off at the Michigan Avenue side of millennium park, see the bean, go across the street to the (free) Chicago cultural center and check out whatever they've got on display, place is gorgeous. Then go to the art institute if you're up for it. Not much to recommend in grant park there ain't much to it, Buckingham fountain is kinda cool I guess.

millennium park is not big, just get dropped off anywhere there. grant park is huge but most of it is just baseball diamonds, just walk down to buckingham fountain once you've seen everything in millennium and you'll see most of it. from there you can walk to the lakefront also.

no one eats brunch downtown but tourists, which is not to say I'm not sure there are perfectly good options just none of us ever go to them. eleven city diner is prob the place with the best rep and walkable from the park, tho it will be busy on a weekend and personally I think their menu is kinda hit and miss. yolk is a perfectly fine if rather generic spot. I've never been to chicago waffles but looks like a decent option too

yeah they just finished the bulk of the riverwalk reno and it's quite lovely aside from being a big fuck-you to cyclists. walk up that way then you can get burgers at the original billy goat if you've never been, far more memorable experience than any brunch you will find downtown (tho if by 'nice' you meant high-end it ain't that)

edit: if you are looking for a kinda fancy brunch, Atwood is prob a good option

Yup river walk!! There’s also places to eat along both sides of the river if you just want a shitty tourist lunch. Billy goat on lower Michigan is super cool though and the burgers are delicious.

In the other direction you could walk through grant park and down into the museum campus/northerly island. If you just want to enjoy the beautiful weather and take in great views of the skyline that’s the move. There’s like nothing to eat down that way save for some hot dog stands.

What’s that place at the top of the Chicago athletic club? That place is great. Also yea check out the athletic club, which is open to the public since it’s a hotel. Also seconding the cultural center. That place is astounding. See the Tiffany glass dome then go to Macy’s and see another Tiffany glass dome.

I had to look up to remember where river west was lol. Leaving that hood to eat brunch downtown is a bad call you got incredible options near you in river west

Definitely go in the cultural center

Honestly just bring some quick bites with you to tide you over and then uber somewhere else to eat.

cindy's, the view is great but I would rec it for drinks rather than a meal. pretty overpriced, eating in the study on the 2nd floor is the better move there but no place to be cooped up on a beautiful day. also there's often a wait to get up to cindy's on the weekend
