tennis is back!

watched Genie Bouchard v Julie Goerges tonight in the quarters at Auckland and it was great, shotmaking was at a super high level for week 1

Genie quietly had a strong finish to 2018 and moved back up to world #87

she's added Michael Joyce as her coach and looks way stronger mentally than I've seen her in years, hope she can finally win some matches

also might stay up and watch world #182 Bianca Andreescu play Venus - she knocked off Wozniacki last night

here's some dumb + obvious predictions:

Osaka wins another slam
Sabalenka is a consistent top 10 player, maybe wins a mandatory or two
Wozniacki and Kerber regress a bit, drop 5-10 spots
Halep and Cahill are back working together in some capacity before the season ends

Thiem wins French Open
Rafa and Fed finally regress
Djokovic wins 2 or 3 slams
and because I'm biased, Felix Auger-Aliassime moves into the top 50 8-)

Totally agree with you on Sabalenka.. IMO, Thiem wins a slam, just not the French, Nadal takes the French one last time. Fed doesn’t reach a final in any of the slams. I think Medvedev will have a strong year..

stayed up to watch Sabalenka win Shenzhen and Bianca Andreescu advance to the finals in Auckland

if Sabalenka can stay healthy I think she is going to be the next great player in women's tennis - she is almost always unshakable mentally and her power game is incredible

Andreescu is playing out of her mind - she's 18 years old and world #182, won her way in through the qualifiers and dismantled all of #1 Wozniacki, #3 Shieh and #6 Venus and is in the final vs Goerges tonight

the cool thing about her is she adapted her game in weird ways on the fly - like she was out slicing Hsieh and beat her at her own game (which was a totally different look then how she played Wozniacki and Venus) - her serve isn't awesome but she's really strong in the rallies

I think Goerges wins but a good story anyway

I played doubles this morning with some old dudes. They were all backspin. My serve was atrocious (as usual) but I had some good volleys on aggressive poaches. Love to watch the pros play doubles. It's really hard to find though.

Yeah it is a law of nature that old dudes put backspin on everything.

Aussie Open predictions?

I'll say:

Women

i'll go with a 9th consecutive slam champ and pick Sabalenka... back up choice Kerber for some reason...

cheering for Osaka to win another one ASAP but she's had a weird early season

feel like it's anyone's tournament so wouldn't even be shocked to see someone from the next tier of players like Goerges, Mertens or Ash Barty make a run

Men

i guess Djokovic or Kevin Anderson - feel like Anderson is bound to win a Slam one of these days...

Tsisipas and Thiem are gonna go really deep one of these Slams too but maybe not this one

hopeful andy has enough juice to make some kind of a run at wimbledon, that'd be fun. but that's sounding unlikely :(

i dunno if poor Andy even has another win in him, let alone a run :(

hope he can at least make it to Wimbledon

Bautista Agut is a terrible opponent for him in R1 at Aussie Open so I doubt he goes far here but definitely cheering for him

watched Goerges yell "COME ON" four times in one game vs. Andreescu in the Auckland tourney last week and totally overdoing it again today

then Danielle Collins has the audacity to give her one COME ON back and Goerges flips out at her, mid 2nd set now and she's chirping at Collins before half of her serves

federer vs. zverev in the final, zverev might take it

really don't think anderson has a slam in him, but the top is definitely due for another shakeup

The answer is simple: artisanship.

Yeah I am very sad for Murray. Not sure what to expect from this tournament, but I feel like Djokovic probably takes it. Going to have to get creative with my viewing schedule this year I think.

The color guy on the thiem/paire match is just excoriating paires tactics, attitude, general well being. No neutrality.
