most of you are gonna file this one under holy shit I don't care/lol British geography but searching for train tickets has led me to realise that Norwich is further away from Bristol than North Yorkshire is

was v surprised it isn't rhe Cali/NV border.

it also kinda gets to the interesting fractal measurement problem of, say, a coastline. how long is the coastline of great britain? do you measure each little inlet and bay or just straight line across it? do you measure each little pond or puddle or tidal pool? is a meter stick to small, or too large? by some definitions, the length of the coastline of great britain approaches infinity.

so, tbh, it's kinda arbitrary and based on definitions of length and measurement and not really something fundamental. but state lines are arbitrary and based on definitions in the first place.

The coastline paradox is one of those simple yet earth-shaking things you learn in geometry that gives you more respect for how infinitely complex everything is.

sometimes! BUT, according to M-W, it can also be used per this second definition:

2 —used to say that something is true or correct as a general statement even if it is not entirely true or correct
The trip was, relatively speaking, a disaster.

I think that's not a very good example sentence but pretty sure I have encountered some instances where this semantically only makes sense per the second definition and not the first

The horse is not chomping at the bit, it’s chAmping, which is an old disused word meaning grinding the teeth vs a biting motion. The bit actually technically can’t even really be chomped on bc it sits on the gums not the teeth
