Trey backing up Jeff tho would be quite tasty, as would Jeff jamming along with Trey / queuing hits and riffs together

Well that's 2 months before Coventry so I'm sure he was in some darkness at that point but June 2004 is a solid month all around, especially the SPAC shows, and this is one of my favorite Moma's

Jewels, I think it's a combination of drugs, regret, sadness, drugs, shame, and drugs. Weeks before the June shows Trey announced the breakup of the band with this letter:
They'd tried to sort themselves out during the first hiatus, but they didn't do enough to change their organization or their lives before coming back. Trey spent some of 2002/2003 sober, but by the April 2004 Vegas shows he was obviously off the wagon. (Jesse Jarnow's wrote a harsh review of those Vegas shows, and Mike later told Jarnow that the review was discussed during the band breakup meeting.)
Jewels, that's the first show after The Announcement that came out a few weeks earlier and not too long after Vegas '04 which was kind of a mess, an example of which you can hear here: (disclaimer I actually like this Bag, but Trey is lost)
04 on a night to night basis you did not know which Trey would show up. There's parts of those Brooklyn shows that were sharp and the SPAC run shortly thereafter is an all-timer. But during those two separate summer tours, they are clearly in a bad way and entrenched in the habits that lead to the 04-09 break.
And yeah they managed some all-time great music in June and August of 2004 amid the chaos. One of my favourite videos from that time (which I'll try and find later) is them playing on the Letterman marquee in NYC. Trey calls for Tweezer Reprise to close the set but just stands around until Page reminds him that the guitarist starts the song (you can see Page do a little air guitar and then Trey does and "oh yeah" motion and plays it).
just don’t take acid at 3pm when it’s 90 degrees after running that race
I learned that at Superball

agree that this is a particularly good Moma, which I hadn't really taken to yet.
Particularly like the muted fret jam.

which is cool because it's like the easiest and most fun thing to do on the guitar, and I put it in like every song I did before I was good at guitar, but damnit if it isn't perfect here.

thank god for YouTube.. also sick Mark O ref, I see him at shows every years. Cool that Jake Silco is an official photog for Mike shows and certain Phish events these days!

also a lot of August 2004... Hampton Set 1, Great Woods N1 Birds of a Feather is incredible, the AC/DC Bag, Mike's Groove, and Hood are all very good, Great Woods N2 has a great DWD, good playing, and totally unique set construction throughout, and Camden has a pretty top tier jam for me in the Scents and Subtle Sounds and is otherwise good all around.

Nothing in August sounded good at the time. It’s sad bc I do know there are highlights, Im just not able to hear it objectively to this day. Weird weird times.
I think in retrospect it was that Hampton Bowie encore that buried me. It got so dark. All I remember was typing in my flip phone during it “Tyrannasaurus Bowie.”
Then I just went through the motions the rest of the week in a daze. I remember at my last show (what I thought was my last show) at Camden, they open with Wilson. On the 2nd or 3rd Duh-Duh it struck me so clearly. I have no idea why but I was DONE. Walked out, said goodbye to the 04 crew, and bailed on my Coventry tickets.
