FAQs:

What kind of shoes should I get?
Go to a running store, ask them to run a gait analysis.

What marathon training plan should I follow?
JZ likes BAA programs
There are also Jack Daniels, Pfitzger, Hansons programs that are popular. Make sure you understand what each workout is for and how to properly pace and perform them. Do not go near Hal Higdon. If you're serious about training/getting better, find a local running club to join that has a reputable coach/team.

Are my easy days too fast?
Probably, damn near everyone in this thread runs them way faster than they should be.

Everytime I run in winter I get this horrible inner ear pain less than a mile in.

Ya i dont know. I want to say its sinus pain. As it goes down to past 40 though, I just can't handle the cold air. I probably just need to man up.

battling a hamstring strain that just won't go away. I know I should probably rest it for a week or two, but can't bring myself to do it.

We're in the same boat. My knee's been nagging me for a while so I cut my mileage. Just ended up taking a week off. I felt like shit but I think I'm about ready to get back out there.

It's better to take time off now than to have it develop into a serious injury that'll keep you out for months.

got some new shoes last week, asics gt-2140

Image

was feeling some knee pain with my old ones but that seems to have subsided for the most part, but I have been feeling some soreness in my inner right ankle after using the new ones, though I suspect that may have been from doing clockwise laps on a really tiny track my first time out with them. anyway after my long run yesterday I don't feel anything besides the usual aches in my legs so I'll take that as a good sign

Ran about 4-5 yesterday for the first time in a week. Knee pain came back. Fuck.

I think I'm going to try running in an old pair of shoes and see what happens.

Here you go:

http://smiweb.org/omt/guides.html

Standard intro for new people reading this thread: The SMI guys used to work on us in college. They are magician geniuses at injury prevention and recovery. The guides are the single best thing I've seen on the Internet in regards to running injuries, stretching, strengthening, and injury prevention. They should be one of your first stops for any information on those subjects.

Start with "injury prevention for runners" and go from there.

also, Ryan Hall AND Meb Keflezighi (NYC winner) are running the Boston Marathon this year. That's going to be awesome:

man that sounds awesome, just try to keep up with them and see how mortal you are.

i saw a doctor the other day and he said he's worried about my knee. it was a lot looser than it should be, had more give to it when he was pulling on it. he said i needed to take time off and strengthen it. my mom works there and he told her to "try to convince me to switch sports" but fuck that, i run.

I get the same thing, even when wearing headgear to cover them. It seems to get worse when I get really hot, which is weird.

Anyways, I'm trying to get my mile down to 5:30. I'm at 5:57 or so right now, and the cold weather isn't helping. I need to stop smoking.

On the plus side, I finally found a pair of headphones that stay in my ears the whole time without constant re-adjustment.

It's a little sensor thing, but it's only $20 (plus either having a compatible Nike shoe to put it in the sole or a $5-$10 for a little pouch to hold it on your laces).

The most expensive part is your iPod/iPhone.

It keeps track of how far you have run and how long it's been. I'd totally buy it, but I can't carry my phone while I run. I hate having to lug around a nano in my pocket as it is.
