their albums seem to leak early often. maybe it's the band's way.

I guess I like this. but it doesn't crash on me like a mountain. just a chill lil wave.
also I think the first song, the first single, is the best song on the album. which always means a little bit of an anticlimax.

I wouldn’t say it’s a disaster but it’s the closest thing I’ve felt to “oh, just another deerhunter album” so far :/

There's some interesting sonic stuff at points, but bradford's songwriting has never been weaker. I could see a tighter edited group of tracks being released as an idiosyncratic EP, but this thing as an album in the deerhunter discography is a bummer

"what happens to people?" slaps. "plains" should be longer.
everything else just kind of happens

idk I really like the vibe of this album and it's cohesiveness. Lovin it and think it's a grower. Thanks Bradford.

OK I've done like five listens through now and it's still .. well I skip songs midway which is something I just shouldn't do with Deerhunter

Death In Midsummer was/is such a good song, and it captured my imagination, and seemed real majestic and mysterious and thanks to the accompanying video I was expecting perhaps some other big sweeping haunted rock tunes evocative of a barren landscape but instead.. as someone else pointed out, the songwriting doesn't really take any interesting turns, it's all pretty insular sounding, and the production just feels really, well it's certainly pretty but it's 'just there'... Brandon's going through the usual Everly Brothers with Depression on LSD motions but the songs just feel so .. plodding.. like bedroom experiments with money spent on production. Whereas the older songs were sorta like bedroom experiments elevated to something majestic. I guess I wanted majesty. Death in Midsummer is majestic. Would make a pretty good EP. Which for most bands is just fine, but Deerhunter are better than most bands but this album is not better than most albums. :(

I kind of like it but my first impression was they're flying close to the 'dad rock' sun. Also, I'm not sure why they put that detournment song in, it really kills the flow of the album half way through.

Or why Greenpoint Gothic is song three

It’s not like you need an instrumental breather at that point

Sadly, I agree with you guys. Pretty disappointed with this album. It's not bad by any means, but it's just not very exciting or good.

I suppose if they released more material next year to give it some kinda context my opinion might change, otherwise there's not a whole lot to chew on here

like, we wait 3 years for a handful of oddball acoustic tracks, some of which are instrumentals

it's either an artistic statement or I feel somewhat slighted, I'm not sure which

not sure why everyone is taking such a harsh line. it's great. their bar is super high so yeah, maybe this doesn't scale their peaks. still: very enjoyable as per

Detournement is pointless shit mind

I'm personally just waiting for release because, I dunno. But I am worried that it and the new Sharon Van Etten, out the same day, are both going to disappoint.

This is super good - I guess it's them trying to make some pop songs, the production is super wild.

I understand why people in this thread are having a shitty time with this album. Fluorescent Grey did enough in my life that I will always give them a chance and I'm really enjoying this.
