What would I need to start blood bowl? Just the new box with humans and orcs? Where can I get more armies?

damn can i get a repost of that armageddon rulebook?

i've had my shit packed away since moving (and effectively since age of sigmar tbh), but that could make me pull the paints back out

what i'm really looking for is the updated rulebook with all the added factions

is that out yet?

also, for others who were absolutely repulsed by age of sigmar, have you seen this?

http://www.the-ninth-age.com/blog/index.php?entry/763-what-is-t9a-exactly/

it's a fan-made proper upgrade to warhammer created as an alternative to age of sigmar. it seems like it kicks ass. all the rules and everything are free, they just slightly altered the names of the factions to avoid copyright issues

trying it might not be the worst thing in the world?

the new warhammer rules sets are really short and it's no longer a big chore to absorb and understand them, and games are real quick and breezy. unless you absolutely can't get over the vibe/aesthetic of the table (not having units in neat regiment formations) or can't stand the knowledge that it's all occurring in the stupid weird new setting

i've been playing Necromunda about once a week since March, and it's really fun

they released another skirmish-level for the AoS universe, called Shadespire, that is apparently a tightly-written and balanced game. maybe you could try that? i think a starter warband is like 30-40 bucks for 6-10 models?

not having regimented units is a pretty big deal for me, and the fantasy space marine dudes too

i will definitely look up shadespire though

yeah, the sigmarines are the most wretched, and every time a new one comes out it's dumber and uglier than the last

i can't guarantee Shadespire will be any good, but it's definitely a low-effort/low-risk reentry to this stuff. plus, if you're jonesing for painting, doing up a little group of 10 guys (and then never playing with them) probably feels better than doing a little group of 10 guys, who are supposed to be part of a unit of 30 guys, who are supposed to be part of any army of 112 guys (and then never playing with them)

damn that necromunda board is absolutely sick

here I am in my 1-bedroom desperately tetrisizing the boxes in my closet just to make room for my eventually-to-be-assembled Kingdom Death minis

Stuntman: Hipinion for me is like a choose-your-own adventure where every topic is a direct path to the depressed thread.

starting an after school group for figure painting and tabletop gaming with a handful of really rad kids. i'm as excited as they are to paint, play and nerd out to some 40k, fantasy battle, etc. stoked as hell to get out all my old armies and loan them out for battle once again.

Probably not but the problem is probably "good 40k lore" rather than "overview."

it's been a long time, but i remember thinking the 40k lore was sick as hell. but it's not the first time i've heard people say it's no good, so maybe you have to be 14.

my friend's older brother had a book about the dark age of technology and the astronomicon with amazing artwork that really inspired my interest into sci fi. i particularly recall a full page drawing of the emperor's throne. the closest thing i can find online is this, which falls very short

My brother and I started with fantasy around 3rd ed when they sold that boxed set with orcs v. Brittania. We went to one our mom's friends house for a dinner party and we were the only kids there but the adult son was super chill and talked to us. It came out that we played warhammer and he said, "Oh, cool, check this out".

The guy had beautifully assembled 40k armies but all from the original - rogue trader. He gifted the rulebooks to us. It was cool but we didn't appreciate it at the time because we were young and more enchanted with the sleeker direction they were pushing the aesthetic and rules in. It wasn't until much later that we really began to dig how much lore was in the 1st ed, how much tongue and cheek and just like, love of sci-fi came through in the stories in the art.

Big scan dump here. really interesting to see the starting point (too broke for color lol) and how the style is evolved. I especially like the biology textbook like diagrams, and the one artist they had who was clearly obsessed with Giger.
apologies for the big post!
